Pootoogook Jaw

Pootoogook Jaw is the son of master carver Joe Jaw and his mother Melia was an artist as well. He has observed and learned many things from his father Joe as well as other prominent carvers in Cape Dorset. Pootoogook has over 35 years of experience carving stone from the Baffin region. He is a master carver in his own right. Pootoogook Jaw carves stunning detailed sculptures in a wide range of subjects. He enjoys carving human figures like drummers and musicians and honours his Inuit heritage. He also explores Shamanism and Arctic animals through his artwork. Pootoogook has a distinct style and is well known for his intricate detailing. He is involved in sharing his knowledge with younger carvers and hopes to keep the artistry alive in future generations. His son Ottokie Jaw is also a carver and a musician and his nephew Noah Jaw is a full time carver as well. Pootoogook Jaw’s work has been exhibited in Canada and Europe.
